Spider-Man: The Animated Series premiered in 1994 and ran until 1998, prior to the release of the first big-budget, live-action Spider-Man movie featuring Tobey Maguire in 2002. The cartoon was full of non-stop action, pulse-pounding music, and cameos by other Marvel Comics heroes and villains, making all of the live-action Spider-Man movies seem dull by comparison. Without the budget constraints of a live-action feature film, the series was able to include episodes with the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and a large cast full of popular Spider-Man characters in a universe that felt pulled straight out of the comics.
One of the highlights of the series was it’s visual adherence to comicbook-accurate characters, something many live-action comicbook movies seem to be moving away from. The series came at a time where it seemed like good business to celebrate what made the comicbooks popular, rather than trying to reinvent them for a new or modern audience. Where the newer Tom Holland movies went with a younger Aunt May and the Maguire movies opted for a less-dynamic Mary Jane, Spider-Man: The Animated Series featured the characters as they appeared in the comicbooks at the time.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series knew what made Spider-Man and Marvel work and used it … a lot of it, often in a single episode.
The Alien Costume was a 3-part story arc in season one that introduced Spider-Man’s black costume, which eventually became its own character, Venom. While the live-action movie version of Venom (starring Tom Hardy) portrayed the character as an anti-hero, the original was a villain and became one of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes.
