Douglass S. Willians says photography is his passion and you can see it clearly in his work.
He has a great knack for capturing characters in their element, choosing his surroundings carefully to give his photos a unique and realistic quality, which makes many of them appear to be promotional stills from a movie production or shots of fictional characters that stepped off a comic book page and into the real world.
“I usually refer to myself as an experimental photographer,” he says. “I have an idea and I go for it. It will either work, or it won’t. Either way, I will go for it!”
Based out of Long Island, NY, Williams says he’s been into photography as an art form for just over 6 years, but has always enjoyed taking pictures and capturing memories.
It’s his goal “to create various images that are either imbued with emotions, generate emotions within others, or are a pleasant blend of both.” He adds, “I yearn to create thought provoking images to challenge the minds of others.”
He credits frustration for his entry into the field. He had been manipulating photos and adding digital effects of friends’ photos since 2002, but decided that relaying posing instructions to them through e-mail without actually being there to help them get the poses just right wasn’t working.
“[The photos] almost never came to me how I wanted them,” he says. “So I picked up a camera and have been at it ever since.”
In addition to cosplay and convention photography, his specialties include architecture and people. But regardless of his subject, he says he loves playing with “the balance of light and dark.”
“In photography, one cannot exist without the other for me,” he says. “Most of my favorite shots utilize this.”
Williams is currently still accepting appointments for shoots at the 2016 New York Comic Con for Saturday and Sunday. To contact him for a photo shoot, you can reach him through Facebook, Instagram, and his website.
