Cobra & Destro Invade East Coast Comicon

Zany Geek teamed up with John Cage to bring Cobra Commander and Destro to East Coast Comicon on Saturday, April 16 at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, NJ.

Although a relatively smaller convention, East Coast Comicon was the ideal size for the Meadowlands Expo Center. The convention made use of the entire show floor for booths, unlike Walker/Stalker and Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, both of which used a large portion of the same facility for panel seating and had to expand their shows into the Expo Center parking garage, leaving fans scrambling for nearby parking options.

Celebrity guests included Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols (Uhura), Star Wars’ Jeremy Bullock (Boba Fett), Flash Gordon’s Sam J. Jones (Flash), and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Steve Cardenas (Rocky the Red Ranger). The hall was also packed with cartoon and comic creators, including Mark Waid, Mike Zeck, Jose Luis-Garcia Lopez, Ann Nocenti, Neal Adams, Phil Jiminez, and dozens more.

With over $1000 in prizes in their Sunday costume contest, the show proved to be a popular draw for cosplayers from all over the tri-state area. Cosplayers gathered in parking garages and on the steps of the Expo Center and other nearby buildings for photo shoots.

Cobra Commander and Destro, the two main villains from G.I. Joe, were very warmly-received by convention goers of all ages who expressed their enduring love of the show.
